Information about Germany

Literature: Germany played an important part in literature because of Gutenberg, a German, who invented the letterpress in 1450 which revolutionized the way books were produced. Before that time books had to be copied by hand, from 1450 onwards they could be printed. One of his most famous books was the Gutenberg Bible. The Bible as the most printed book ever was first printed here, but obviously it wasn’t written in Germany.

The Brothers Grimm were born in Hanau, Germany. Jacob was born on the 4th of January 1785 and Wilhelm - on the 24th of February 1786. The Brothers Grimm are probably the best known story tellers in the world. Many years have passed since the time Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm released their "Children's and household tales". The first Volume of Grimm's fairy tales was released in 1812. The first edition and was very modest, both in appearance and capacity - there were only 83 fairy tales, compared to the 200 we know today. Together they collected a huge collection of fairy tales and many of them are known worldwide like Snow White or Hansel and Gretel.

Geography: The countries which border Germany are: Poland, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands. Germany has got some really good lakes for bathing. The Müritz is the largest lake in Germany without borders to other countries and has a size of 117km². The Chiemsee has got a size of 80km². Lake Constance (Bodensee) has got a size off 536km² and borders Austria, Switzerland and Germany.

Politics: In 2009 Angela Merkel and her party the CDU/CSU with the FDP won the elections of the German government. The federal president of Germany is directly elected every five years. The German government, the Bundestag, is elected every four years. The latest federal election was held on 22 September 2013 to elect the members of the 18th Bundestag of Germany.The CDU/CSU of Chancellor Merkel won their best result since 1990, with nearly 42% of the vote and nearly 50% of the seats. However, their coalition partner the Free Democrats (FDP) failed to get over 5% of the vote, thus denying them seats in the Bundestag for the first time in their history. Merkel's party reached a coalition agreement with the main opposition party the Socical Democrats (SPD) to form a grand coalition.

Music/Art: At an early age, van Beethoven, took an interest in music and his father taught him day and night. Beethoven’s fame began to pay off; he soon found himself prosperous. His symphonic works proved to be master pieces. On March 26th 1778, at the age of 7 ½, Ludwig Van Beethoven gave his first public performance at Cologne. Because of an inflammation of the middle ear in his childhood, his hearing decreased all the time. In 1819 he became deaf.

Eurovision Song Contest: Germany has attempted to participate in every Eurovision Song Contest since its beginning in 1956. Although German contestants have had limited success compared to their neighbours, public interest remains high and the contest is one of the most watched events each year. The first time she took part in the Eurovision Song Contest she won with the song Satellite. The second time she took part, she sang Taken by a stranger, but Lena didn’t win again.

Sport: In Germany group activities, team sports and competition take place very frequently. Playing with neighbors and friends is one of the leisure activities of Germans. Germany has a lot of famous people in sports, for example, Steffi Graf, Michael Schumacher and many football players. In the last years both Bayern München and Dortmund won a lot of times many important games and tournaments. They dominated the Germany league, the Bundesliga and also internationally. Bayern Munich won almost every big cup and defeated Dortmund in London. Michael Schumacher has won the most tournaments, but Sebastian Vettel was only 23 years old when he won the Formula 1 for the first time. In the last four years he has won the Formula 1 championship, too.
