Despite the feeling of being free to act, Europeans seem to suffer from a lack of great enthusiasm to be active citizens. Because of a growing lack of awareness and an increasingly multicultural society, people’s attitudes to their role in society and Europe are changing. Nowadays, young people commonly stop believing that individual actions can change anything. Furthermore, it seems to be the case that the people living in Europe don't feel like and are not proud of being Europeans because they do not know enough about each other in terms of similarities and differences. The idea of our project is therefore to make the students aware that it is necessary to be an active European citizen because only by doing and being active every individual can contribute their part to unite Europe . Thus our aim is not only to involve students being part of the project but to also, hopefully, set fire on others to underline the European idea.  Hence, the title of our project is: “Through small steps to giant leaps – my contribution to a united Europe”.
At the end of the two years the final event will be an "Active European Citizenship Day" at which we will actively show in a public place what it means and needs to be proud of being a European citizen.  To develop a sophisticated conviction on being a European, one has to look at several different dimensions of cooperating, interacting and living together in Europe. That is the reason why we focus on the following areas and steps to unite Europe:

  • Steps Towards Democracy and Social Rights
  • Steps Towards Reducing, Reusing and Recycling
  • Steps Towards a European Cultural Identity
  • Steps Towards a Solidarious European Economy
  • Steps Towards Safer and Healthier European Citizens
  • Steps Towards a Europe Without Borders
